AFME is seeking to hire a motivated Senior Associate to join our Frankfurt office. This role will coordinate the association's advocacy and engagement with ECB Banking Supervision, playing a pivotal part in strengthening AFME's relationship with the ECB and deepening the understanding of the EU supervisory architecture.

AFME's Frankfurt office is instrumental in developing and executing AFME's strategic objectives in Germany. This is an exceptional opportunity to work across different areas in supervisory and regulatory affairs, engaging daily with senior stakeholders at the leading European and global banks.

The Senior Associate will be an integral part of AFME's pan-European advocacy team and an organisation at the forefront of shaping regulatory change in European financial markets. The role requires creative thinking, excellent communication skills, and the ability to connect prudential regulation, supervision, and regulatory requirements in a complex, fast-changing environment.   How we work:

On behalf of our pan-European and global membership, AFME aims to provide fact-based analysis, industry insight and expertise to support financial sector regulatory processes and help ensure a clear understanding of how financial markets can meet the needs of the European economy.

AFME's Advocacy Team works together with member firms and subject matter experts to articulate industry views and contribute rigorous analysis to the policymaking process. The role will involve exposure to AFME's broader activities in analysing regulatory and supervisory developments and contributing to European legislative and public policy debates.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identifying and monitoring ECB supervisory priorities and trends.
  • Reporting to senior member representatives and AFME colleagues on the functioning and evolution of the EU supervisory framework (including the ECB, SSM, ESRB, EBA).
  • Expand AFME's network with ECB Banking Supervision and other supervisory bodies. 
  • Develop responses to supervisory consultations and contribute to advocacy materials and submissions, including research and data gathering. 
  • Providing the secretariat to AFME's supervisory committee which brings together the heads of supervisory affairs of AFME's member banks: planning and coordinating meetings, agendas, minutes, follow up actions, proposing work plans, committee governance.
  • Producing the "From Frankfurt" Newsletter for AFME members, providing an overview of relevant supervisory and prudential developments.
  • Support coverage of selected dossiers across other regulatory and government affairs.
  • Assist with team projects and administrative tasks as required. 
  • Collaborate closely with prudential regulation and advocacy colleagues to ensure alignment across work streams.

Competencies:
Essential:
  • Able to work through complex technical matters, to synthesise large volumes of information and to identify key issues.
  • Ability to build consensus across member firms.
  • Able to communicate with both specialists and non-specialists in a clear, concise and straightforward manner.
  • Strong interest in financial services and EU policymaking.
  • Willing to take on new topics and desire to acquire practical experience beyond current expertise, develop new knowledge quickly, able to prioritise and multi-task efficiently.
  • Technical rigour and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with confidence to liaise and build relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Proactive attitude, ability to work independently and strong organisational skills.
  • High levels of self-motivation, intellectual curiosity, and energy.
Knowledge, skills and experience:
Essential:
  • 1-2 years of experience working in a regulatory authority, financial services firm, central bank, regulator/supervisor, trade association, think tank or professional services firm on financial service policy matters.
  • Understanding of and keen interest in the EU legislative process for financial services and the EU supervisory framework.
  • An academic background in EU studies/finance/law/economics or other relevant field.
  • Understanding of the ECB supervisory system.
  • Familiarity with the European banking and capital markets landscape.
  • Ability to draft reports and prepare presentations.
  • Excellent English drafting skills.
 Desirable:
  • Previous experience in European prudential regulation and/or supervision
  • Other European languages in addition to English an asset
