Thesis - Model Development for Degradation of PEM Electrolysers
______
Students — Thesis
Gifhorn
This challenge awaits you:Hydrogen plays a key role as an energy carrier and chemical raw material in the defossilization of the energy, transportation, and chemical sectors. Among the various methods of hydrogen production, PEM electrolysis stands out from other technical alternatives due to its high efficiency and high dynamic capability. However, depending on the load range and operating mode, these advantages can be partially offset by increased cell degradation and thus power losses during long operating times.
In the past, IAV GmbH has developed and validated a comprehensive simulation model for the degradation of PEM fuel cells. In the thesis or internship, the findings and mechanisms of PEM fuel cell aging are to be transferred to PEM electrolysis. The focus will be on the electrochemically induced degradation of the catalyst and the carrier material.
Your Tasks:Specifically, the following activities and work steps are to be carried out as part of this master's thesis and internship. On the part of IAV, the work processes will be supported by degradation and electrolysis experts using existing models, specialist knowledge, and content-related discussions:
- Research and concept development: The basic mechanisms of PEM electrolysis degradation are partly identical to those of PEM fuel cell degradation, but they can differ due to the higher voltage in the kinetics and the effect. Therefore, the first step is to review the literature to examine the transferability of fuel cell aging to electrolysis aging. Based on this, an initial model concept will be developed.
- Modeling: Once the concept has been developed, the actual modeling can begin. The initial assumption will be a platinum catalyst. The model will be validated and checked for plausibility based on data from the literature.
- Transferability and generalization: In addition to platinum, other materials such as iridium are also used as catalyst materials. Simulation studies will be used to discuss the transferability of the model approach to other catalysts or configurations.
Current master's degree in a technical or scientific field, such as process engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physical chemistry, or industrial engineering
Interest in or, ideally, initial experience with electrochemical systems, preferably electrolysis
Programming skills in Matlab, Python
Initial practical experience in process engineering modeling is desirable
Very good German or English skills (at least C1 level)
Strong communication skills, ability to work in a team, and an independent and responsible working style
Diversity and equal opportunities are important to us. What counts for us is the person with their personality and strengths. We look forward to receiving your application, including a cover letter, resume, current transcript, and relevant certificates.
Remuneration is based on our collective bargaining agreement. The current monthly salary for this position is EUR 979.
Desired Skills:You won't just be working anywhere as a student at IAV. You'll be right in the middle of it all. Real projects. Exciting future tasks. Completely integrated and side-by-side with IAV experts. Lots of responsibility and at the same time lots of freedom, combining university and work. The result is the best prospects for your professional development. And attractive compensation in accordance with our company wage agreements.
