The **Clinic for Neurology -Department of Epileptology
- **is looking for a

**PhD Student (f/m/d)**:
The part-time position (25,03 h./week) starts as soon as possible and is funded for 1 year, an extension of the contract for additional 2 years is intended.

The Department of Epileptology has a focus on the mechanisms underlying the pathology in genetic and acquired forms of epilepsy syndromes. To achieve this goal, we will utilize a variety of techniques including next generation sequencing, molecular biology, single cell and network electrophysiology.

**Tasks**

Our research group has a long-standing experience in studying genetic and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying neuronal hyperexcitability and network dysfunction. We identified and functionally characterized several new epilepsy genes on the single cell and network level (e.g. Schubert et al. Nat Genet 2014) and have developed a new innovative tool to study the cortical circuitry in adult human networks (Schwarz et al. 2017 and 2019). The student will use state of the art technology to investigate the mechanisms of disease in the context of epilepsy including:

- Electrophysiological single cell and network recordings in brain slices
- State of the art analysis of complex network behavior
- Cell Culture, molecular biology (e.g. virus production and cloning) and single cell RNA-Sequencing
- Two-Photon and Confocal microscopy experiments

**Your profile**
- The position requires a Master in Biology / Medicine or a related discipline (e.g. molecular biology, molecular medicine, physics), ideally with a focus on neuroscience
- We are looking for highly motivated and qualified researchers interested in the mechanisms underlying the development of epilepsies.
- Skills in genetics (next generation sequencing analysis), molecular biology, electrophysiology (patch clamp, EEG recordings) would be of great value. Women and people with disabilities are given preference for the same suitability.
