Oldenburg, Deutschland Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg Vollzeit

ForWind - Center for Wind Energy Research has a vacancy in the team Energy Meteorology of the working group "Wind Energy Systems" at the Institute of Physics of the University Oldenburg for a **PhD position** (f/m/d) On this position the research focus will be on the development of an AI-based method to refine information from mesoscale simulations of the atmosphere into high-spatial-resolution information on wind and wave conditions for wind turbine sites in the German Bight. Over the last decade large-eddy simulations (LES) have become a state-of-the-art tool for detailed investigations of the interaction of individual wind turbines and wind farms with the atmospheric ambient flow. However, due to the high demand of computing power, it has not been possible to perform LES for longer time periods, such as the lifetime of a wind farm. Mesoscale simulations have been increasingly used in recent years for the purpose of generating wind atlases, such as the New European Wind Atlas (NEWA). **Job description** In the third-party funded research project MOUSE, you will develop an AI-based method, such as the so-called analog ensemble, to link the results of mesoscale simulations and LES in such a way that you can use predictors in the mesoscale data to derive LES-compliant information about wind and wave conditions as well as turbine behavior for long periods of time. The goal is to achieve a more accurate description of environmental conditions and turbine behavior over longer time periods than what is possible with methods available today. The MOUSE project will provide you with an HPC computer, the infrastructure needed to perform the simulations and develop the AI method. You will conduct your research in a team that has over two decades of experience in numerical simulations of atmospheric flows using the LES model PALM and the mesoscale model WRF. Among others, your tasks in the job offered will comprise: - performing mesoscale simulations and LES for a wind turbine site in the German Bight, - deriving and weighting predictors for predictands in the LES data from the mesoscale data (forming the analog ensemble) or developing another AI-based method, - the validation of the developed AI-based method, - presenting your results at project meetings and conferences. **Job Offer** We offer you the opportunity to develop your scientific career in a young and lively academic environment. You will be working in the WindLab - one of the university's most modern office and lab spaces - while you will also have the opportunity for flexible and mobile work. The pathway towards the PhD is actively supported by, e.g., - multidisciplinary cooperation with the other researchers at ForWind in Oldenburg, - collaboration with our national and international partners in research and industry, - optional secondment at an international research institute, - development of personal, scientific, and teaching skills through an individual training programme and selected teaching tasks, - opportunities to present scientific results at international meetings and conferences to build your specific network, - structured supervision of PhD process. The employment is initially limited until 30.06.2026 with an intention for further prolongation up to four years to facilitate a PhD. The payment is based on the collective agreement for the public service in the German federal states, TV-L E13, for a 75% position. - Requirements for an employment include: - a qualifying university degree (diploma or master) in physics, mechanical engineering, renewable energy (with major in wind energy) or in a similar field, - aptitude and willingness to pursue a PhD, - profound knowledge in large-eddy simulations of atmospheric flows, - basic knowledge in mesoscale modelling of atmospheric flows, - experience in analyzing large data sets on HPC clusters, - an experience abroad of several months during the school or study period, - very good English skills. Desired (but not mandatory) qualifications are: - profound knowledge in AI methods, - experience in using the LES model PALM including wind turbine simulations, - experience in using the mesoscale model WRF, - experience in parallelizing codes for use on GPUs, - and good German skills. The Universität Oldenburg strives to increase the proportion of women in science. Therefore, women are strongly encouraged to apply. In accordance with - 21, para. 3 NHG, female applicants will be given preferential consideration in the case of equivalent qualifications. Severely disabled persons will be given preference in the case of equal suitability. Further, the university cares for a family-friendly working environment and offers a family service centre and children's daycare on campus. **Contact** The pdf file must include either in English or German: - Curriculum vitae - Grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma - Employment references - A one-page research statement. The applicants are requested to pre
