EMBO is a not-for-profit organization that promotes excellence in life sciences in Europe and beyond. We fund talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulate scientific exchanges through high-quality academic publishing, conferences and lectures, and help build a research environment where scientists can achieve their best work.
EMBO has over 2,000 members and associate members, who are eminent scientists elected by their peers. They form the backbone of our community and serve as members of the selection committees for our programmes as well as on EMBO Council.
Our international staff of around 65 members from a variety of countries, personal circumstances and professional backgrounds work closely together for the greater good and make EMBO a truly diverse organization. EMBO is located on the international EMBL life sciences research campus in Heidelberg, Germany.
As Head of EMBO Membership, Courses & Workshops, you will be responsible for overseeing the election of new EMBO Members and Associate Members, the annual new members’ meeting, and other activities
You have
- A PhD in life sciences or in a related field;
- A strong scientific background including international and cross-disciplinary research experience;
- Experience of leading a research team;
- Broad understanding of the life sciences and enthusiasm for academic research and scientific cooperation;
- A passion for interaction with the international life science community, and a strong interest in fostering community ties;
- The ability to work on several projects flexibly and concurrently;
- Experience of budget management;
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, as well as the ability to co-ordinate a complex range of activities;
- The ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively and meet multiple deadlines with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail;
- A proven track record of both leading and working in a team;
- A positive attitude and customer service focus;
- Well-developed communication, presentation and interpersonal skills;
- Proficiency in current office software (specifically MS Office 365);
- Excellent written and oral English language skills.
You might also have
- Experience of working in scientific administration;
- Knowledge of the functioning of scientific associations, publications, academies, and learned societies;
- Knowledge of international scientific event organization and life science funding schemes;
- Knowledge of statistical packages, content management systems and databases, and grant and customer relationship management systems, as well as familiarity with Mac OS.

- Contract duration_
EMBO offers a fixed-term contract of five years for this position, issued through our sister organization, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Appointments on fixed-term contracts can be renewed up to nine years in total, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
