In the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg the following position is available in the working group Processes and Sensors of Marine Interfaces at the location Wilhelmshaven: **PhD student (M/F/d)** **Detection of essential climate variables at the sea surface** (E 13 TV-L, 67 %) **as soon as possible **for a limited period of three years ICBM is an internationally renowned research institute for basic and applied marine sciences. The institute's more than 20 research groups strive for a better understanding of the function of marine environmental systems through close cooperation between different scientific disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematical modelling). The position is part of the externally funded project **NorthSat-X (The North Sea from space: Using explainable artificial intelligence to improve satellite observations of climate change**), which the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science is funding in the program "Digitization in the Natural Sciences" in a first letter. The goal of NorthSat-X is to improve the quality of remote sensing data using in situ surface measurement data in order to better estimate future climate changes in the North Sea (including sea surface temperature, salinity, precipitation). For this purpose, extensive data is collected and evaluated using statistical methods. **Your tasks**: - the investigation of the variability of surface temperature, salinity and other climate-related data on the sea surface using statistical methods. - Operation of the catamaran in the tidal influenced area, the open North Sea and central Atlantic to study the variability of surface temperature, salinity and other climate relevant data on the sea surface. - Comparison of the area-wide observational data in the footprint of corresponding satellite data. **Requirements**: - a completed scientific university degree (diploma or master's degree) in one of the following fields: Geochemistry, physical oceanography, environmental sciences or a related course of studies - Extensive knowledge of data processing and analysis of large data sets, preferably in Python, Matlab or R. - Willingness and aptitude to participate in sea expeditions lasting several days on research vessels **Ideally you have the following skills**: - Expertise in physical oceanography and experience with physical measurement techniques and/or radio-controlled or autonomous platforms - Experience in geostatistics - social and intercultural competence, and ability to work in a team - good skills of the English language **We offer**: - Opportunity for doctorate - Collaboration in an interdisciplinary, international and dedicated research team - Scientific promotion and further training in the graduate school OLTECH - Providing compatibility of family and career - New offices and laboratories in the new ZfMarS research center The Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg is striving to increase the proportion of women in science.
