Currently we are seeking a motivated and innovative Biochemist and/or Biophysicist to join our Target Characterization group. As a scientist you will be an integral member of the group and play an active role in pharmacological target characterization and screening for “hit” identification in the field of pharmaco-oncology (molecular cancer therapy). You will participate in efforts to develop and integrate cell-free and/or cell-based functional assays in small molecule screening campaigns to support our target-based drug discovery process with focus on the areas of unmet therapeutic need such as colon and lung cancer. Based on a good understanding of state-of-the art drug screening methods, you are expected to contribute to the generation of biochemical tools that effectively enable development of first-in-class therapeutics against a validated target. **Your responsibilities**:

- This is a lab-based position with more than 75% of time expected to be spent in screening and characterizing protein targets and developing assay protocols.
- As an experienced scientist in the field of ligand screening, using biophysical methods, you will use purified proteins or relevant protein domains for biophysical ligand screening and ligand-target interaction characterization (including SAR-type experiments) using techniques such as differential scanning fluorimetry, fluorescence polarization, FRET, isothermal titration calorimetry, or microscale thermophoresis.
- You will also engage and supervise external vendors performing surface plasmon resonance and NMR experiments on our behalf.
- You will collaborate closely with the medicinal chemists and theoretical biophysicists performing virtual ligand screening and modelling part of SAR and also actively engage with a team of biochemists purifying the proteins and performing the biochemical assays.
- You also will troubleshoot and support new project needs as an assay development expert independently and in collaboration with colleagues.
- You will be responsible for drafting SoPs, data generation, analysis/interpretation and communicate the results effectively orally and in writing.
- You will manage and mentor Research analysts, if assigned.
- Last but not least you will contribute to departmental administration and ensure proper maintenance of records in accordance with policies.

**Our requirements**:

- At least 3 years of post-doctoral experience in biophysical methods listed above and experience in the establishment of screening procedures for target molecules in cell-free and cell-based systems (essential)
- Broad knowledge and strong background in assay development techniques for a range of protein target classes (enzymes, receptors, ion channels etc) and state-of-the art fluorescence, luminescence and absorbance detection methods
- Scientifically creative and results-oriented with attention to detail and expertise in common data analysis and management software (Prism, imageJ, eLN etc)
- Excellent communication skills in English and German
