In the project “LABLUC - brown algae as potential for carbon storage near Helgoland” funded by the Ministry for Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment and Nature, the MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences of the University of Bremen is seeking to fill the following position at the earliest possible date:
**Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d)**
**Salary Scale EG 13 TV-L**

limited until 31 March 2029 (in accordance with - 2 WissZeitVG)

The position is to be filled with 70% of the regular weekly working hours (27.44 hours/week).

**Stellenbeschreibung**:
**Your tasks**:

- Planning of and participation in sampling of brown algae around the North Sea island of Heligoland
- Determination of fucoidan synthesis rates in different brown algae species depending on environmental variables
- Support of seawater and sediment sampling off Heligoland to determine the concentration and sinking of fucoidan in the water column and fucoidan storage in sediments
- Collaboration with project partners at Kiel University to assess the carbon storage capacity of brown algae on Helgoland using a model
- Willingness to travel abroad for international conferences to network and present project results
- Support in writing project reports
- Publication of the results in international journals

**Voraussetzungen**:

- Solid knowledge of instrumental chemical analysis (LC, MS)
- Knowledge in the field of marine glycobiochemistry, as well as enzymology and biochemistry for the analysis of glycans
- Experience with sampling macro algae
- Willingness to participate in expeditions lasting several weeks
- Excellent written and spoken English
