Numerous new technologies and processes are being developed at Fraunhofer ISE, so that solar cells can be produced on an industrial scale faster, better and above all less expensively. Making a decision as to which approach should preferably be pursued requires not only a scientifically well-founded technology assessment, but also detailed knowledge of the associated costs and ecological impacts. You will be part of the research group "Techno-economic and ecological analysis" within the Division "Photovoltaics". Through detailed process modelling and material flow analysis we perform techno-economic and ecological assessment of both current standard processes and various new technologies and process sequences. Our goal is to determine the most sustainable technology option, by considering the economic, environmental and social impacts based on the specific boundary conditions. High-efficiency solar cells are expected to play a key role on the pathway to net zero emissions by 2050. Perovskite as well as perovskite silicon tandem solar cells promise to be an important technology on this path due to its potential to lower the cost and environmental impact of photovoltaics. They are however still in research and development. The industrialization and upscaling of perovskite production capacities mean that new value chains will need to be created. The aim of this work is to first analyze the required material demand for a large scale deployment of perovskite based solar cells and to map potential supply routes and identify its key actors. Based on this findings, potential supply risks along these value chains, that could arise from the need for critical/scarce materials, supply concentration, governance, and social factors are to be assessed. **What you will do** - Selection of the most relevant perovskite-based device architectures and process routes based on literature review - Analysis of the future material demand with an industrial scale deployment of perovskite based solar cell structures - Supply chain mapping, incl. identification of process routes, locations, and key stakeholders - Assessment of potential supply risks from raw material mining to photovoltaic cell manufacturing for the large scale industrialization of perovskite based solar cells, incl. potential bottleneck of critical/scarce materials, supply concentration, governance, and social factors - Presentation and validation of the results through discussion with stakeholders from research and industry - Proposal of recommendations to further guide perovskite technology development - Consolidation and presentation of the results within a thesis **What you bring to the table** - Degree in industrial ecology, environmental sciences, renewable energy engineering or another related field - Knowledge in the field of photovoltaics, supply chain management or life cycle analysis is advantageous - Good analytical skills, Ability to carry out research independently and in a quality conscious manner, Ability to execute research tasks within a given timeframe, Ability to work in team - Good MS-Office competencies - Excellent written and oral command of English, Knowledge of German would be an advantage **What you can expect** Our team consists of various experts who will support you in your work.
