Scientist Position Investigating Movement Patterns

The work is carried out as part of a multidisciplinary, federally funded, project, HaffStör, which is assessing conflicts between protected species with a focus on Baltic sturgeons and the fisheries and navigation constructions in the Szczecin Lagoon area, through the determination of the overlap of fish movement and habitat use and anthropogenic activities.
The subproject described here will utilize telemetry to assess movements and habitat use of Baltic sturgeon released in Oder River in the lower river section and the Lagoon area while contributing to the assessment of fisheries intensity and impact assessment in the area. The work will be conducted in an international team in close collaboration with the Regional Research Institute for Agriculture and Fisheries as well as Szczecin University, using well-equipped laboratories and the infrastructure of a leading institute in the field.
**Your tasks**:
- Conduct tagging experiments
- Document the movement and habitat utilization of tagged sturgeons in the lower Oder River and Szczecin Lagoon area
- Support fisheries surveys to determine effort and gear applied
- Verify the impact (spatial) of dredging and construction activities
- Analyse the impact of the anthropogenic activities upon the habitat utilization of the species at different ages
- Close collaboration with other working groups in the project
- Dissemination of research results (papers, conference presentations)
**Your profile**:
- Holding a PhD or a master degree in biology, fisheries sciences, or a related field with focus on fish biology or aquatic ecology, or equivalent education is obligatory
- Practical experiences with field work and experimentation in the field, collaboration with practitioners is required
- The will and ability to travel for the field work are essential
- Driving license, boating license are required
- Experience in the planning and implementation as well as analysis of telemetry work would be beneficial
- FELASA B certificate (animal experimentation permit)
- Advanced skills in statistical methods (mixed-effect models, preferably in R) are required
- Good communication skills and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team
- Excellent oral and written English skills and sound German skills are required

Salary is paid according to the German salary scheme for the public sector (TVöD Bund). Depending on the personal qualifications and the tasks assigned, the position will be paid up to E 13. It is a full-time position with 39 working hours per week. It is a fixed-term project position, limited until 31 December 2026. Part time work with a minimum of 65% of a full position is possible if the scope of the project can be ensured.
