The group of bioinspired autonomous miniature robots at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart is developing an underwater soft robot that can achieve active control of stiffness. The work combines the newly invented artificial muscle with an active stiffness control mechanism, and our target is to make an autonomous undulatory fish robot that can smartly adapt its body stiffness distribution with superior swimming performance in changing fluidic conditions.

**Student assistant (M/F/div)**:
Volume of employment: Max. 83 hours per month

**Your area of responsibility**:
The assistant will be involved in the following tasks:

- designing and optimizing the robot's mechanical structure
- robot fabrication and assembly
- designing the robot's control and power supply systems
- fabrication and evaluation of artificial muscles' performance
- building the test platform
- Data collection and postprocessing

**Your profile**:

- Interest in applied research
- Background knowledge in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or chemical engineering is preferred.
- Experienced user of CAD software, e.g., Solidworks, etc.
- Experience in 3D printing and laser cutting
- Willingness to work on weekends and holidays
- Experience in teamwork
- Computer skills are desirable
- Confident handling of the English language

**Our offer**:
We offer you thorough training in a varied job in an interdisciplinary team with excellent working conditions. Master students holding a Bachelor’s degree will be paid €12,68 per hour. An initial contract will be offered for three months. A modernly equipped workplace, a strongly international working environment, as well as the affiliation to a daycare center for young children.
