**Background and Motivation**:
RWE Offshore Wind GmbH is one of the world's largest power producers from offshore wind power and a leading driver of the energy transition, especially green hydrogen. Green hydrogen is key to the energy transition needed for net zero emission targets. To achieve this, offshore and onshore production of hydrogen would play a key role. However, some of the technologies needed to achieve the least possible levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) is still emerging. One of such is power islanding or power island modes of offshore or onshore off-grid wind farms. Power islanding is needed for microgrid formation for a cost-effective production of green hydrogen from wind energy.

**Internal status**:
Several studies on power island mode of wind turbines have been performed at RWE already. For this work, the concept to be applied exists but needs to be further investigated for practical considerations. The detailed solutions created in this master’s thesis will feed into our future wind farm developments.

**Work packages of your Master’s Thesis**:

- Study the concepts of grid-following and grid-forming wind turbines.
- Study the electrical topologies of inter-array cablings of wind farm and their impact on energy production and electrical stability (transient start-ups, faults etc.) of the wind farm.
- Study the concept of centralised production of hydrogen using water electrolysis connected to an electrical bus on an offshore or onshore substation.
- Study an existing RWE concept for power islanding of a hydrogen producing offshore wind farm.
- Create an inter-array cable network of wind turbines for power islanding using simulation tools.
- Perform analysis using electrical engineering techniques and simulation tools to examine the feasibilities of power islanding of the hydrogen producing offshore wind farm using the aforementioned RWE concept and further develop it.
- Execute load flow calculations, steady-state and transient analysis of the system during fault scenarios.
- Investigate the benefits, limitations of the system and improvement techniques for the power island.
- Document the thesis in English language.

**Your Profile**:

- Enrolled master’s student in physical sciences or engineering, preferably with a focus on electric power engineering or control engineering.
- You are available for the entire period during the preparation of the master thesis (up to 6 months) and ideally already have a supervisor at your university
- Ideally first practical experience in the industry.
- High level of initiative, reliability and strong organizational skills with a keen eye for detail.
- Professional communication skills and a confident manner.
- MS Office skills and the ability to quickly learn new IT tools.
- Skills in simulation, e.g., DIgSILENT, MATLAB Simulink etc.
- You enjoy modern scientific methods in an international company and team at the core of the energy transition.
- Fluent English language skills, as part of your colleagues are not from Germany.
