Berlin, Deutschland The New York Times Vollzeit

**The **mission **of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a newsroom that’s 1,700 strong and sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
***:
The New York Times has a long and storied history covering Russia, dating back nearly a century. Now The Times is expanding and looking for an experienced correspondent to join our Russia team.

With its invasion of Ukraine and its vast energy resources, the Russia story is critical to the course of the world. In this role, the correspondent will tackle questions like: will the Kremlin manage to maintain popular support at home? Will the West’s unprecedented sanctions persuade the Kremlin that its war is too costly? Or will Putin keep raising the stakes in what is already a dangerous conflict with the West?

It is not just the war.

Russia’s diverse population, its enormous resource wealth, and a political system that is more complicated than meets the eye, make it an extraordinarily challenging beat. We need to help readers understand Putin’s grievances and ambitions, the lives of his supporters and the power of state TV. We need to tell the stories of those risking their lives to fight his rule in ways big and small, inside Russia and in exile. But our reporters also need to go beyond the headlines that dominate today to explore broader issues tied to culture and identity, and the wide-ranging consequences of climate change across the country.

This post will initially be based in Berlin, with the intention of the role being based in Moscow longer-term.

**Job responsibilities**:

- Follow news, events and cultural trends in Russia to determine, in conjunction with your editor, themes worthy of coverage as breaking news, day news or as enterprise.
- Build a network of sources in and around the Kremlin to better understand Putin’s world.
- Provide rich and original reports, news and features about Russian affairs, its relationship with China and other global powers, and overall coverage of the broader region given the war.
- Cover news accurately and efficiently; maintaining and cultivating news sources and contacts; obtaining information through interviews, observations and research.
- Present facts and analysis in clear written form and in conformity with style, length and other requirements, and developing high-impact stories from the broader themes that underpin incremental news developments.
- Coordinate and collaborate with international photo, multimedia, design and graphics staff to bring stories to life in a variety of formats across all NYT products.

**Requirements**:

- Strong writing ability and reporting experience, preferably for a global news organization.
- An understanding of Russian history and the complexities of Russian politics.
- A keen eye for original themes, profiles, and features.
- Strong newsgathering and analytical skills.
- Good news judgment and knowledge of world affairs.
- Experience working in Russia and/or fluent in Russian.
- An understanding of the needs and behaviors of our audience, and of how to reach a broad range of readers
- Ability to work collegially with other correspondents in the bureau and around the world.
- Familiarity and understanding of The New York Times’s DE&I report and initiatives both in terms of our journalism and as a leader.
- Commitment to The New York Times’s standards and mission.
