**PhD Student / Scientific Assistant (M/F/d)**

**pay group 13 TV-L**

with 65% of the regular weekly working time (currently 25,87 hours/week), for a three year appointment.

We are looking for a PhD student to conduct research on methods for maize breeding that leverage wild maize (teosinte). The key traits of interest are seed size and protein composition. The research will take place in the Göttingen Division of Plant Breeding Methodology, in the Department of Crop Sciences and Center for Integrated Breeding Research. Our division is a highly-interdisciplinary group that includes scientists working on an array of crop species. We collaborate frequently with other divisions in Göttingen, especially those comprising The Center for Integrated Breeding Research (CiBREED). CiBREED includes scientists studying highly diverse breeding-related questions that relate to crops, animals, and trees. The research is part of a DFG-funded project that will take place over the course of three years.

Your tasks:

- You will conduct maize field work including planning, planting, phenotyping, and harvesting trials and nurseries.
- You will perform genome-wide association studies and selection mapping for QTL identification.
- You will travel internationally for winter-nursery field work.
- You will write well-documented code and software enabling your methods to be applied by other researchers.
- You will draft and publish scientific papers.
- You will present your results at national and international conferences.
- You will assist in teaching activities for the Göttingen Division of Plant Breeding Methodology.

Your profile:

- You have (or will soon complete) a Master’s degree in plant breeding, animal breeding, statistics, mathematics computer science, quantitative genetics, or a related field.
- You have experience doing field work with maize.
- You have experience with advanced statistical/mathematical concepts, or a demonstrated willingness to further your education in these areas.
- You have experience writing code in R, Python, or a comparable programming language.
- You have experience with high throughput data processing and SLURM (job scheduler), or a willingness to learn.
