The position is based at the BIH QUEST Center for Responsible Research, which aims to increase value and reduce waste in biomedical research. The student assistant will work with the staff data scientist to assist with the quality assurance and further development of tools designed to screen scientific papers. With such automated tools we can identify common problems with the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of scientific studies. We can use this information to develop targeted solutions to improve scientific research.

**Working field**:

- The student assistant's primary role will be to perform quality checks on outputs from a diverse set of automated screening tools. This includes tasks such as:

- Manually classifying text and images from scientific papers
- Investigating cases misclassified by the automated tools
- Running scripts to generate data sets and then performing manual validation in order to assess and improve tool performance

Additional activities may include:

- Data handling, cleaning, and synthesis

**Requirements**:

- Necessary skills:
Attention to detail, and the ability to perform repetitive tasks in a consistently high quality manner
A willingness to learn about automation and strategies for improving transparency and reproducibility in published papers
Excellent English language skills
Experience with the R or Python programming languages (basic skills sufficient)
Desirable skills:
Prior experience with meta-research, automated screening or machine-learning is beneficial, but not required
