Einleitungstext
Mitochondria are crucial for many functions within the cell and essential for the viability of nearly all eukaryotes. As mitochondria have originally been investigated as solely entities within a cell, they are now considered as part of an active metabolic network together with other organelles. Our group is located in the Department of Cellular Biochemistry at the University Medical Center Göttingen. The goal of our research is to understand how mitochondria are integrated into the cellular network to fulfil manifold functions such as ATP production or reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. To do so, mitochondria rely on the biogenesis and maintenance of the mitochondrial proteome of which 99% is nuclear encoded. Hence, we aim to understand i) how mitochondrial functions influence cytosolic protein synthesis; ii) how they maintain a permanent functional import pathways for newly synthesized proteins and iii) which save-guarding mechanisms are in place to keep mitochondrial import running.
To address this, we are integrated into the priority programme SPP2453 of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft, DFG), where we with our collaborators combine biochemical and cell biology approaches with high resolution mass spectrometry and the analysis of cytosolic quality control prozesses.
Göttingen is an international student city located in the center of Germany, where besides the University and University Medical Center a number of renowned institutes such as the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences are located, providing a stimulating collaborative environment.
