Research Assistant

Professor Nazli Sönmez, Assistant Professor of Management Science, is seeking a highly motivated research assistant to assist her with her project “Increasing the Follow-up Rate of Patients Requiring Emergency High-Consequence Treatment”. She uses econometrics and machine learning techniques to predict the probability that a patient will show up for treatment using data from a large scale randomized controlled trial conducted in a large eye hospital.

**Research Assistant**
(M/F/x, 10 hours per week, for 3 months with option to extend, to start as soon as possible)

**You will**:

- Assist in evaluating and analysing the data extracted from the Affectiva software. The software provides second-by-second tracking of facial muscle movements such as lip or eyebrow movements and head movements of study patients while watching treatment videos. It also provides second-by-second measures of their emotions such as sadness, happiness, surprise, anger, etc. as well as of engagement. You will need to use some machine learning techniques to predict patient outcomes using this dataset
- Assist in analysing the text data from the surveys of the experiment using natural language processing methods

**You are qualified for this position, because you**:

- have an MS degree or are a currently a PhD student
- possess strong analytical skills and an ability to work on machine learning packages using some of the following: R, Python, Stata
- have an interest in healthcare operations research, text data analysis, emotion AI
- have knowledge of the software “Affectiva”, which provides second-by-second tracking of facial muscle movements such as lip or eyebrow movements and head movements
- are familiar working with MS Office tools, especially with Excel
- are curious and driven
- are fluent in English
