Medical Records Technician

**Duties**:
- Codes disease and injury diagnoses, acuity of care, and procedures in a wide range of inpatient, Outpatient Surgery, and ED specialties.
- Performs qualitative analysis to ensure accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded data.
- Conducts group education briefings on coding; assists in the development and deployment of entry level training programs.
- Performs audits of coded records and provides direct feedback to coders.
- Reviews the medical record for continuing quality improvement activities including comparison of data with that entered in the medical record.

- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- This position requires Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel approximately 5% of the time away from your permanent duty station.

**Specialized Experience for the GS-06**:
One year of specialized experience which includes identifying causative agents for injuries and infections; assigning appropriate cause codes and evaluating the sequence of diagnoses; confirming procedures associated with the inpatient admission and/or outpatient treatment accurately. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).**OR**
**Education**:A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Medical Records Administration, Medical Technology or Medical Science.**OR**
**Combination of Education and Experience**: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.**Specialized Experience for the GS-07**:
One year of specialized experience which includes working in a medical facility as an outpatient /inpatient coder; confirming all diagnoses and procedures associated with treatments; performing quality control of medical data and medical records; utilizing and understanding medical terminology in a wide range of specialties and assisting in educational coding and/or documentation training classes for professional medical staff. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).**OR**
**Education**: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Medical Records Administration, Medical Technology or Medical Science
