The team you'll be part of belongs to Bell Labs Core Research (BLCR) within Strategy and Technology, located in Stuttgart, Germany. In the BLCR Radio Systems Research lab, you will carry out groundbreaking research in the area of wireless communications, by designing, benchmarking and prototyping novel transceiver technologies and architectures, as well as new physical layer signal processing concepts. You can bring strong research knowledge and expertise to a cross-disciplinary team.

**What you will learn and contribute to**

As part of our team, you will be involved in research projects aiming at pushing the performance, cost and energy efficiency of integrated radio components, transceiver circuits and digital signal processing for multi-antenna wireless systems. Your main mission will be to integrate these components into proof-of-concept systems, to demonstrate their feasibility and performance. Within the BLCR, you will interact with researchers and engineers from multiple domains; that is, RF experts, DSP designers, link/system-level simulation experts, as well as with people from the business division working on the development of products.

Your main responsibilities will be:

- Design & development of proof-of-concept systems for wireless communications, demonstrating new radio technologies and components
- Carry out research in transceiver and digital frontend design, with a focus on multi-antenna systems
- Generate intellectual property through patents
- Disseminate research internally and externally through customer focused presentations, conference and journal publications
- Engage and collaborate with universities and customers on joint research projects

**Your skills and experience**
- A PhD degree in computer science, software engineering, embedded systems development, electrical engineering or equivalent,
- Strong practical skills in developing low-level software (C/C++) and/or digital hardware (VHDL)
- Excellent familiarity with the Linux operating system and Linux based software development
- Good familiarity with modern communication standards (e.g. 4G/5G or WiFi)
- Experience with RF measurements, as well as in designing and maintaining test environments for wireless communication systems
- Able to collaborate both with the immediate team as well as others in the larger Bell Labs community as need arises
- Highly engaged and hands-on personality, versatile and a self-starter, acting as an integrator, and being able to think out-of-the-box
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, can express yourself fluently in English. German language skills are helpful but not required.

It would be nice if you also had:

- Expertise in at least three of the following areas: Linux, IP networks, radio frequency technologies, RF hardware measurement techniques
- Experience with industry standards for base station architecture (such as O-RAN, vRAN) and protocols (such as eCPRI, NGAP)
- Experience in embedded processing (ARM/AI cores) and system integration
- Test control, signal generation and postprocessing in Matlab or Python
