The mission of the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung is to understand and design nanostructured materials down to atomic and electronic scales. In this spirit, we conduct basic research on structural and functional materials, mostly metallic alloys, embracing synthesis and processing, characterization and properties, as well as their response in engineering components exposed to real environmental conditions. We work interdisciplinary, with intense mutual stimulation among experimentalists and theoreticians as well as among different groups and departments.

Your tasks

We look for a motivated student with background on synthetic chemistry and interest in learning characterization techniques by electron microscopy.

Your tasks will be:

- Characterization of the nanomaterials by operating a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for imaging and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDS) analyses.
- Actively participating on the acquisition and data treatment of (scanning) transmission electron microscopy ((S)TEM) measurements of the Ir/TiO2 nanostructures.
- Measurements of the electrochemical properties of the Ir/TiO2.
- Participate on the publication of the results in scientific journals.

**Profile**:

- Bachelor/Master student in Chemistry, Nanoscience/Nanotechnology, Materials Science or a closely related field.
- Experience in inorganic chemical synthesis in chemical labs is mandatory (e.g. long curricular practicums, extracurricular practicums, internships in universities or industries of the field ).
- Excellent written and oral English skills.
- Interest and engagement on scientific research and acquiring new skills.

What we offer

Our group: “Nanoanalytics and Interfaces” is an Independent Research Group focused on the analyses of functional materials down to the atomic scale to correlate their structure to their properties. We specialize on the advanced structural characterization by cutting-edge electron microscopy and associated spectroscopy techniques. Our group is composed by a collaborative, interdisciplinary and international team working close with the other groups at MPIE.

Your position: The duration of the Bachelor/Master thesis is coupled to the requirements of your university, finishing upon the thesis defence. You will be supervised directly by Raquel Aymerich Armengol (PhD student) and by Prof. Scheu.
