The University of Cologne is one of the largest and most research-intensive universities in Germany, offering a wide

The Granular Matter Group investigates the microscopic mecha
- nisms that determine the collective mechanical properties of large
particulate systems. We study transitions between granular solid-/
fluid-/gas-like states. In experiments, reconstruction of inter-parti
- cle forces and velocity distributions in 3D is a current major chal
- lenge and focus of our work.

YOUR TASKS
- Development of Machine Learning-based analyis code for the
3D granular stress-optical inverse problem
- Simulation of polarized light propagationin 3D
- granular systems (sphere packings under mechanical load)
- Generating training data for machine learning algorithms

YOUR PROFILE
- BSc in Physics or equivalent
- currently enrolled as university student
- Previous work on machine learning and/or stress-birefrin
- gence image analysis
- Knowledge of LaTeX and Python
- Fluent in English or German

The position is available as soon as possible on a contact in the
scope of 9.5 up to 19 hours per week, up to 40 hours per month.
Smaller work quotas are also possible by arrangement, e.g. to stay
within marginal employment requirements. This is an employment
initially limited to 6 months, an extension is presumed possible and
desired. Remuneration is based on the internal university remuner
- ation system directive on the Employment and Remuneration of
Research Employees and student assistants.
