Thesis: Optimization of a powder switching device for material efficiency in LMD

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT offers the opportunity to write a thesis. Laser metal deposition (LMD) is an industrially established additive manufacturing process for producing complex components, which is used in the aerospace industry, among others. The cost-effectiveness of the process is largely determined by the consumption of the metallic powder material used. In this context, the ILT has developed a novel control concept for the powder-gas jet that enables the filler material to be diverted between the process area and a collection container with virtually no delay. The optimal design of such a fluidically controlled powder switch requires a fundamental understanding of the interactions of all design-related influencing factors, which will be developed in this work using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.
