Thesis: Laser polishing of roller bearings for tribological surface improvement

Topic: Investigation of laser polishing of 100Cr6 roller bearing steel to improve tribological properties. Surface topography plays a key role in reducing friction, wear and energy losses in tribologically stressed components. In bearings in particular, it influences the running-in phase and thus longevity and energy efficiency. Conventional processes such as superfinishing achieve very smooth surfaces, but reach their limits when it comes to complex geometries, small components and sustainability aspects. Laser polishing offers a resource-saving alternative here, as local melting creates a functionally advantageous surface that potentially enables a more stable and low-friction running-in phase. The aim of this work is to systematically investigate the influence of different grinding conditions and laser parameters on the resulting surface quality and to understand the relationships between process control and tribological functionality.
