Your missionSpace is getting crowded and satellite collisions are becoming a real threat, at OKAPI:Orbits we build software that keeps space operations safe and sustainable. As a Working Student AI Engineering / LLM Prototyping (m/f/d) you help us explore how modern AI can improve our products and internal processes. You work with LLMs, RAG pipelines, chunking strategies, agent frameworks and vector databases, and you turn these into small end to end demos. You combine tools like LangChain, LangGraph, vector DBs and (cloud) APIs to build working MVPs that show what is possible today. If you feel motivated by our mission and you bring a strong interest in AI engineering, we encourage you to apply, even if you do not check every single box.Your tasks and responsibilitiesBuild functional MVPs for AI based features or tools, from prompt design to a simple backend or frontendDevelop RAG pipelines and test different chunking, indexing and retrieval approachesWork with vector databases, embeddings and metadata filteringDesign and test AI agents using LangChain, LangGraph or API based frameworksEvaluate different LLMs for quality, speed and cost depending on the use caseIntegrate prototypes with internal APIs, tools or datasetsWork closely with engineering and product teams to validate ideas and refine requirementsPresent your results, document what worked and what did not, and propose next stepsYour profileEnrolled in a Bachelor or Master program in Computer Science, Data Science, AI, Engineering or a related field at a university in GermanyPractical experience with Python for scripts or small prototypesComfortable using AI models through APIs and libraries such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Hugging Face, LangChain or LangGraphCurious about retrieval systems, embeddings, vector search, chunking and agentic workflowsYou enjoy trying out ideas and turning concepts into working demosAble to work independently and explain results clearlyGood English skills, German is a plus but not requiredNice to haveFirst experience with REST APIs, simple web development or cloud basicsDocker knowledgeInterest in the space domain or NewSpace startupsWhy us?Real impactYour prototypes influence what we build next. If something works, it can become part of our tools or product roadmap.Learning cultureYou work with experienced engineers and product experts who support your growth and give you space to explore.Flexible working modelWorking student contract with flexible hours that fit your studies, hybrid work from Brunswick or Munich possible.Exciting domainBe part of a European NewSpace startup working on SSA, STM and collision avoidance.Supportive team cultureOpen communication, knowledge sharing, company events and local benefits depending on location.Training budget for continuous developmentCorporate benefits like BahnCard 25/50, gym membership support, German classes via LingodaFree office drinks, monthly company lunch, regular after-work activitiesAbout usOKAPI:Orbits is at the forefront of space sustainability, addressing some of the most pressing challenges of the space industry: the growing problem of crowded orbital regimes, and the need for more efficient satellite operations. We're providing end-to-end solutions that help various space industry players cover their Space Situation Awareness (SSA), and Space Traffic Management and Coordination (STM & STC) needs. We are committed to safeguarding space missions and access to space for all humanity. Join us on our mission.Last but not least, we would like to share with you that research shows that women are less likely to apply for a position unless they meet 100% of the listed requirements. Please know that if it’s your case — but you are passionate about space technology, building reliable software, and contributing to a more sustainable space environment — we strongly encourage you to apply.OKAPI:Orbits already brings together a highly diverse team, and we actively continue to strengthen this diversity which allows us to achieve higher performance and drive innovation.
