We are seeking a highly accomplished Principal Research Scientist I to lead our Medicinal Chemistry team in Ludwigshafen, Germany. As a key member of our organization, you will be responsible for designing and synthesizing small molecules aimed at identifying and advancing promising leads.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with a diverse team of scientists who design and synthesize drug candidates for novel targets throughout our drug discovery pipeline. You will also serve as a Medicinal Chemistry Lead for some of these efforts, leveraging your expertise in synthetic chemistry to drive high productivity in the laboratory setting.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in medicinal chemistry, including experience with strategic planning, leadership of medicinal chemistry teams, and collaboration with cross-functional teams. You will also have a proven track record of productivity in the laboratory setting, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to create an inclusive environment where diverse ideas and viewpoints are valued.

About the Role

  • Lead international Medicinal Chemistry teams and partner cross-functionally to advance projects by applying state-of-the-art methodologies in drug discovery
  • Design and synthesize low-dose drug candidates and develop stage-appropriate progression funnels for their identification from research to development
  • Promote professional development of a team of scientists through effective mentoring, guidance, and supervision
  • Maintain awareness of emerging literature and science in the field and author scientific disclosures/publications
  • Present program updates and research strategies to functional and non-functional leaders as well as potential and existing partners

Requirements

  • PhD with 6+ years of experience in organic or medicinal chemistry or equivalent field, or BS/MS with 14+/12+ years of relevant work experience in biotech/pharma
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in modern medicinal chemistry, preferably also in protein degradation and CNS-drug development
  • Highly organized and self-directed, with experience leading medicinal chemistry teams and managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor interactions with technical teams and represent the medicinal chemistry advances to AbbVie leadership
