At Fraunhofer IWM, we conduct research on materials and components to better understand, develop, process, and use them. Our projects bridge the gap between material properties and the durability, safety, and function of technical systems. We aim to increase energy efficiency and sustainability, as materials are crucial for climate neutrality, resource conservation, and the sustainable transformation of our economy.

What You Will Do

In our "Forming Processes" group, we optimize forming processes and tools, develop models describing material behavior, and determine relevant material and process parameters. Your tasks will include:

  • Modeling the complex manufacturing process of a large turbine shaft
  • Carrying out finite element simulations and validating them with real process data
  • Analyzing results and correlating predicted microstructures and mechanical properties with experimental results
  • Using results for component and process optimization, considering various influencing variables
  • Staying up-to-date with the latest developments in material and process simulation by familiarizing yourself with current publications and literature

What You Bring to the Table

Your professional background:

You are currently studying Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related subject and ideally have experience with finite element simulations. As part of your master thesis, you would like to deepen your knowledge in the field of material modeling and simulation.

Qualifications that complement your profile:

Your strong problem-solving skills enable you to independently find solutions to complex problems and take a critical look at the issues you are dealing with. Ideally, you also have gained experience in materials mechanics and/or forming technology in the past. Your strong communication skills and ability to work in a team round off your profile.
