System Optimization Engineer

As a System Optimization Engineer at ENERTRAG SE, you will play a crucial role in the development and implementation of techno-economic optimization models for Power-to-X projects. Your expertise in numerical optimization, energy economics, and software development will be essential in supporting the System Planning team in their efforts to optimize energy systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain software tools to support the optimization efforts of the System Planning team.
- Collaborate with the team to perform techno-economic optimization of Power-to-X projects.
- Ensure code versioning, collaboration, and management using Git, following best practices for branching, merging, and pull requests.
- Participate in code reviews to maintain high software quality and consistency.
- Identify performance bottlenecks and optimize code to improve efficiency and scalability.
- Develop and extend new optimization models, implementing them in a suitable programming language (e.g., Python).
- Prepare and present results in a clear and comprehensible manner, using visualization techniques to enhance understanding.
- Write reports for internal reviews and decision-making, and conduct site inspections as needed.
Requirements:
- Completed degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related field, with a specialization in applied mathematics (optimization, operations research) or energy being a strong advantage.
- At least 4 years of hands-on experience in software development, with advanced proficiency in Python and Git.
- Understanding of energy economics and expertise in numerical optimization (linear/non-linear programming).
- Relevant professional experience in energy system modeling (capacity expansion and production-cost modeling), or experience gained during post-graduate studies.
- Structured approach to work, strong teamwork abilities, and a high level of determination.
- Experience with open energy modeling tools for electricity generation and transmission expansion planning, such as PyPSA, Balmorel, or Calliope, is a plus.
- Fluency in English and German is a plus.
