We are seeking a highly qualified Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/div) - AFAR (Algorithmic Fairness for Asylum-Seekers and Refugees) project

This part-time (32 hours/week) position is designed to enable an early career legal scholar of human rights and artificial intelligence (AI) to engage with the AFAR project.

About the Role

As a member of the Centre for Fundamental Rights, you will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Professor Cathryn Costello (UCD), and other members of the AFAR research group.

  • Develop and deliver a work plan for one individual research output on the themes of the AFAR project.
  • Contribute to a joint publication with another AFAR team member on the AFAR themes.
  • Support the team's legal research on theories of fairness, fairness standards, and AI, drawing on European human rights and EU law, in the context of automated decision-making in migration and asylum governance in Europe.
  • Arrange and participate in a series of AFAR workshops and dissemination activities across Europe.
  • Support the development of the AFAR Tech Litigation Database.
  • Actively contribute to the academic life of the Centre for Fundamental Rights.
Your Profile

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • An excellent academic track record and a doctorate in law or a closely related field, preferably with a focus on AI and human rights in the field of asylum and migration in Europe.
  • Knowledge and understanding of international and EU law in the fields of data protection, AI, and human rights.
  • Excellent legal research skills and a proven ability to manage your own independent research.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary and international team and engage in collaborative research.
  • Previous scholarly publications, commensurate with experience.
  • Very good presentation and communication skills, and ability to communicate findings to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
