About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Ontologist to join our Product Knowledge team at Amazon Development Center Germany GmbH. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining our product knowledge graph, ensuring it is accurate, comprehensive, and easily discoverable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement logical data models for our extensive product catalog
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver knowledge-based solutions for product discoverability
  • Analyze website metrics and product discovery behaviors to inform data-driven decisions
  • Develop and refine data retrieval techniques to utilize our knowledge graph
  • Contribute to team goal setting and future state vision
  • Drive and coordinate projects with merchandisers, engineers, designers, and other groups
  • Develop team operational excellence programs and data quality initiatives
  • Evaluate and refine data governance and processes used by global Ontologists
  • Mentor and influence peers

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Library Science, Information Systems, Linguistics, or equivalent professional experience
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience in ontology and/or taxonomy roles
  • Proven skills in data retrieval and data research techniques
  • Ability to quickly understand complex processes and communicate them in simple language
  • Experience creating and communicating technical requirements to engineering teams
  • Ability to communicate to senior leadership (Director and VP levels)
  • Experience with generative AI and Semantic Web technologies
  • Knowledge of opensource and commercial ontology engineering editors
  • Detail-oriented problem solver with strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient English language skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building ontologies in the ecommerce and semantic search spaces
  • Experience working with schemalevel constructs
  • Proficiency in SQL and SPARQL
  • Familiarity with software engineering life cycle and ontology manipulation programming libraries
  • Exposure to data science and/or machine learning, including graph embedding
