We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team at the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam. The successful candidate will work on a project investigating the geomorphological evolution and erosion of the Comoros archipelago.
The researcher will use tools of quantitative geomorphology to constrain the chronology of volcanism and study the impact of post-eruption aging of volcanic surfaces on the morphology of drainage basins and river networks.
The project also involves the analysis of high-resolution satellite radar data and the characterization of lahar hazards and/or the impact of the 2018 seismic crisis on landslides occurrence.
The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Loraine Gourbet, Prof. Thomas Walter, and Prof. Nicolas Villeneuve, and will be part of a collaborative environment that values diversity and teamwork.
The researcher will be responsible for:
- Investigating the geomorphology and landscape evolution of the Comoros archipelago
- Quantifying erosion rates of the islands of the Comoros archipelago based on paleosurface reconstructions
- Proposing a relative chronology of the formation of the islands and volcano structures
- Acquiring and processing satellite data, particularly on the active Karthala volcano
- Publishing research results in international peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences
- Contributing to writing proposals for external funding
- Collaborating with members of the section and collaborating sections at GFZ
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Earth Sciences, demonstrated interest in volcanic geomorphology, and proven familiarity with programming languages such as Matlab or Python. Familiarity with numerical modelling of landscape evolution and experience in analysing remote sensing data are desirable.
