Food Innovation Manager

About the Role
Univar Solutions is a leading global product supplier spanning food ingredients, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics serving over 80,000 customers across 100 countries. We have globalized our Solutions Centers (Laboratories and Food Application Kitchens) under a single umbrella, creating a globally coordinated technical operation that delivers enhanced value and service from our laboratories and kitchens.
This position plays a key role in leading and coordinating activity in our new EMEA Food Solutions Center, part of our Global Solution centers. You will oversee the activities of our Essen Food Solutions Centre, including its people and projects. You will work seamlessly with our commercial teams to create innovative new food creations utilizing the ingredients from manufacturers we represent.
You will act as a technical and food innovations figurehead, working with our marketing and commercial teams to play a key role directly at our customers and at internal and external events such as trade shows. Our global labs and food centers are a key part of our business, and a strong commercial acumen is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead product development, recipe, and concept creation and innovation for our vast food ingredient portfolio and applications.
- Bring culinary insights, knowledge of food science/technology, and recipe development skills to guide customers in the food industry to translate food trends into manufacturable products through innovative concepts.
- Work with our key suppliers to feature their ingredients in specific applications while solving formulation problems using these ingredients for key customer projects.
- Understand consumer demand spaces and develop new products prototypes to appeal to customers.
- Showcase recipes & new products at industry tradeshows.
- Responsible for leading engaging product demonstrations through live or recorded webinars and trainings.
- Work closely with marketing to create promotional content for campaigns and the digital knowledge center.
- Plan, prioritize, and complete tasks while maintaining accurate and complete records.
- Work with commercial kitchen equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Manage a pipeline of projects to help expedite customer commercialization of new ingredient purchases.
Requirements
- A true and demonstrable passion for food – not only food science, but for the creation of great food products that appeal to modern consumer trends.
- Strong inter-personal and communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to develop successful business relationships with customers, suppliers, and internal teammates.
- Excellent computer skills including MS Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint as well as CRM platforms.
- Ability to manage time and resources effectively to achieve goals.
- Strong business acumen, including an understanding of the business relationship between manufacturers, distributors, and end-users of products and services.
- Good presentation skills, engaging personality with ability to inspire innovation.
- Driving license.
Education & Experience
- Ideally a degree in Food Science/Food Technology is preferred, but consideration will be given to relevant industry experience.
- Whilst we seek a broad food expertise, an in-depth understanding of bakery and dairy products is essential.
- Knowledge of starches and their use would be a significant advantage.
- 5+ years of relevant work experience.
- Experience with product development.
- Experience with ingredient functionality and cost savings projects.
- Knowledge in food product design, formulation, process design, product scale-up, plant testing, and commercialization.
- Travel – up to 25%.
