Dispatcher Position with the Commonwealth of Virginia

Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to fill the role of Dispatcher (Emergency Coordinator II) in our organization. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for operating multi-channel radio systems, answering multi-line computerized telephone systems, and entering and retrieving information through Computer-aided Dispatch (CAD) terminals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate multi-channel radio systems to communicate with emergency responders and other stakeholders.
  • Answer multi-line computerized telephone systems to respond to emergency calls and provide assistance.
  • Enter and retrieve information through Computer-aided Dispatch (CAD) terminals to manage emergency responses and track incidents.
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints, secure emergency assistance, and comply with all Department policies.
  • Attend to duties as a dispatcher, including participating in Recruitment Unit activities, assisting with projects, engaging with Department employees, participating in assigned activities, and completing assigned training.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Some knowledge of the assigned Division's geographical area, including location of important buildings, landmarks, and waterways.
  • Skilled in keyboarding, including Microsoft software applications for data entry and typing in various databases and web-based programs.
  • Ability to learn radio codes and operate communications equipment, effectively communicate in English with the public and Department employees during difficult or stressful situations, work in a high-pressure, high-volume environment, use sound judgment and decision-making skills to evaluate situations and establish priorities while under stress, solve problems within scope of responsibility, appropriately source complaint/compliment calls correctly, and direct callers to appropriate First Sergeant or Sergeant.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and able to work holidays, weekends, and rotating shifts.
  • Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license at the time of entering the Trooper Basic Session.
  • Must be eligible to become Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certified, which requires either United States (U.S.) citizenship or having been a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. and eligible for naturalization.

Additional Considerations

  • Prior First Aid/CPR experience is preferred.
