The Data Center Engineer is responsible for ensuring the optimal performance of electrical, mechanical, and fire safety equipment in the data center. This involves planned preventive maintenance, daily corrective work, and emergency response to emerging problems.

This role acts as a technical resource for the Data Center Site Manager and external vendors. The Data Center Engineer must maintain greater than 99.999% uptime for critical servers, which includes equipment such as emergency diesel generators, switchboards, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, PDUs, air handling units, chillers, cooling towers, chemical treatment systems, pumps, motors, VFDs, and building management systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain facility systems
  • Perform planned and ad-hoc preventive maintenance work requiring engineering, mechanical, and maintenance trades skills
  • Conduct periodic inspections of building systems, including HVAC, electrical distribution, and mechanical equipment rooms to ensure clean and safe conditions
  • Rapidly respond to indoor emergencies and air quality complaints
  • Have a thorough knowledge of creating, closing, and tracking work requests (WRs), initiating or responding to work orders, and verifying work completion
  • Utilize customer ticketing systems and relevant processes, such as change requests
  • Monitor service contractor performance and recommend changes as needed
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities assigned by management
  • Work in an on-call rotation outside of normal working hours and be able to respond to on-call incidents
  • Write and review operational documents, such as SOPs, MOPs, and EOPs
  • Conduct walks and site checks as needed
  • Perform minimal IT/client-related tasks as required

Requirements:

  • At least 2 years of experience directly related to the operation, installation, and maintenance of critical data center equipment and building systems with a thorough technical understanding of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, and control systems
  • High school diploma or university diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems used in a data center environment, including conductors, transformers, generators, switchboards, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, PDU/PMM, chillers, air handling units, CRAC units, and building management systems
  • Good observation skills and problem-solving ability
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Electrical or mechanical qualification
  • Ability to draft and review operational documents, such as SOPs, MOPs, and EOPs

Estimated Salary: $85,000 - $110,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. This figure is based on industry standards and market trends for similar roles in the United States.
