About the Position

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) is seeking a highly motivated master student to contribute to our research team in the field of environmental sciences. Our mission is to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.

Job Description

We are looking for a candidate to work on a master thesis project that focuses on optimizing ecosystem services through interactive optimization. The project involves adapting an existing interactive optimization algorithm to spatially-explicit optimization problems, further developing the solution's ranking within the algorithm, coupling the algorithm with existing simple ecosystem services models, and applying the algorithm to a virtual study area.

Key Responsibilities
  • Adapt an existing interactive optimization algorithm to spatially-explicit optimization problems
  • Further develop the solution's ranking within the algorithm
  • Couple the algorithm with existing simple ecosystem services models
  • Apply the algorithm to a virtual study area
Requirements
  • Enrolled master student in Geography, Computer Science/Informatics, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Strong programming skills in Python, with optional experience in R
  • Experience in using GitLab/Github is beneficial
  • Knowledge about multi-objective evolutionary optimization algorithms (NSGA-II) is an advantage
  • Interest in ecosystem services and land-use conflicts
  • Independent and structured way of working
  • High proficiency in English
About the Team

The student will be based in the working group AgriScape at UFZ's Department of Computational Landscape Ecology in strong collaboration with the Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science (ECCS) Department of Ohio Northern University, US. The position will be supervised at the site in Leipzig.
