Research Scientist - Doctoral Position in Computational Communication

Your Responsibilities

• Conduct high-quality research in computational media and communication, focusing on the development of innovative methods and tools.
• Attend and present research at academic conferences, and publish in top-tier journals in related areas.
• Successfully complete your PhD within the appointment period, with a strong emphasis on research productivity and academic excellence.
• Teach one class per semester relevant to your research interests in our BA/MA programs, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
• Assist with organizational and administrative tasks, ensuring the smooth operation of the research group.

Your Profile

• Master's degree in Communication Science, Computer Science, Data Science, Digital Humanities, or a closely related field.
• Strong programming skills in R and/or Python, with a proven track record of computational research in digital media.
• Relevant skills include Natural Language Processing (NLP), computer vision, network analysis, and audio signal processing, among other multimodal research approaches.
• Experience or interests in researching visually-rich digital media platforms (e.g. TikTok, Instagram, YouTube) is an advantage.
• Proficiency in English is mandatory for research and publication purposes, with experience in conducting cross-lingual and cross-cultural research a plus.

What We Offer

• Duration: 3-year doctoral position (60% paid according to cantonal salary scheme), with the possibility of extension by an additional 3 years.
• Research focus: Computational communication research, with a strong emphasis on innovation and academic excellence.
• Start of employment: Earliest August 1, 2024, or by agreement, with a flexible start date to accommodate the successful candidate's needs.
