Main Responsibilities

We are seeking a skilled Control Engineer/PLC Expert to join our team at the European Southern Observatory. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing support to ESO projects for the design, analysis, test, and optimization of control systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, implementation, and commissioning of PLC-based control systems
  • Performance tests and verification
  • Support to ELT programme during all phases of its life cycle
  • Follow up of industrial contracts: supporting suppliers on technical aspects, design reviews, PLC code quality checks, functional tests, and simulations
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • At least 3 years of working experience in the area of control engineering, particularly in the development, analysis, design, implementation, and on-site commissioning of PLC-based control systems
  • PLC knowledge: familiarity with PLC and HMI/SCADA systems and programming in at least 3 of the following areas: Siemens S7 TIA Portal, WinCC / WinCC OA, ProfiNet, Beckhoff TwinCAT 3, EtherCAT, OPC UA
  • Sound engineering background in one or more of the following: Electrical / electronics design, Electrical cabinet design, E-CAD systems, preferably EPLAN
Desirable Competences and Experience

We are looking for candidates with experience in:

  • Experience with servodrive systems, preferably Sinamics S120
  • Experience in working in international/multicultural teams
Additional Essential and Desirable Competences for Position 1

For Position 1, we are looking for candidates with experience in:

  • Experience with PLC-based safety applications: Siemens Safety Advanced and/or Beckhoff TwinSAFE
  • Hazard analysis, SIL/PL assignment, compliance check, verification, and acceptance procedures
  • Familiarity with functional safety applications and the relevant standards IEC 62061 / EN ISO
Additional Essential and Desirable Competences for Position 2

For Position 2, we are looking for candidates with experience in:

  • Experience with HVAC and building automation systems
  • Thermal control, industrial chiller plants, process instrumentation
  • Power distribution systems (LV, UPS, MV)
Qualifications

An advanced University degree in electrical-, control engineering or equivalent is required. A first-level University degree in combination with relevant working experience and/or additional technical qualifications will be accepted in lieu of an advanced University degree.

Language Skills

The position requires a good working knowledge of English.
