Master's Researcher in Nanoplastics Retention

vor 3 Wochen

Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland Karlsruher Institut für Technologie Vollzeit
Job Description

Nanoplastics are a growing concern in global drinking water sources, with potential negative health impacts from exposure. As a key technology for nanoplastics removal, ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes require further investigation. This project aims to determine the retention of nanoplastics and subsequent release during hydraulic cleaning using UF and NF membranes. The research will provide valuable insights into monitoring and removal technologies for effective treatment of nanoplastics in drinking water.

Project Tasks
  1. Determine the size, shape, surface charge, and surface morphology of nanoplastics using advanced particle characterization techniques.
  2. Perform experiments using a bench-scale membrane filtration system to quantify the retention of nanoplastics during membrane permeation and backwash.
  3. Analyse experimental data and contribute to writing a joint research publication.
About the Project

This project is hosted by the Institute for Advanced Membrane Technology (IAMT) at the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), one of the biggest research institutions worldwide. The research team is international, and the language is English. The project is the final research project in a Master's degree, and the candidate will be studying for a Master's in Chemical, Process, Environmental Engineering, or equivalent.

Requirements
  • Basic knowledge of water chemistry, water treatment processes, and membrane technology.
  • Evidence of writing skills in English language.
  • Ability to learn/use OriginLab for data analysis/graphing as well as EndNote for literature management.
  • Willingness to lead or contribute to writing a scientific publication.
