Doctoral Researcher

This position is part of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network, supported by the European Commission, which explores the intersection of Spatial Communication and Ageing across Languages (SCALA). The research project at Friedrich Schiller University Jena focuses on the theme of "Egocentric spatial language across ages and generations" under the guidance of Prof. Holger Diessel, who will serve as the principal investigator and PhD supervisor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Employ corpus and computational linguistics methodologies to analyze the usage of spatial expressions across various languages and their evolution throughout the human lifespan.
  • Enroll in the PhD program at Friedrich Schiller University Jena and document your research findings in a doctoral dissertation.
  • Publish research outcomes in reputable international peer-reviewed journals, either collaboratively with the principal investigator or as an independent author.
  • Participate in regular doctoral network meetings and undertake a secondment at one of the partner universities.
  • Attend international conferences and engage in research activities within the linguistics department at FSU Jena.

Candidate Profile:

  • A Master's degree (or equivalent) in linguistics or a related field (e.g., computational linguistics, psycholinguistics, cognitive science) is required.
  • A solid foundation in corpus and/or computational linguistics, along with familiarity with advanced statistical methods, is essential.
  • A background in psycholinguistics and/or linguistic typology is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in the German language is beneficial but not mandatory for application.
  • Candidates must not have resided or conducted their primary activities in Germany for more than 12 months in the past three years prior to recruitment. Short visits, such as vacations or mandatory national service, are excluded from this criterion.
