Our Business
Hapag-Lloyd provides fast and reliable connections between over 400 ports across the world. In the Terminal & Infrastructure segment, the company has stakes in 20 terminals in Europe, Latin America, the United States, India, and North Africa. The approximately 2,000 employees assigned to the Terminal & Infrastructure segment handle terminal-related activities and provide complementary logistics services at selected locations.
Your Responsibilities
As Senior Director of Hazardous Materials, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all international, national, and local regulations related to the transportation of hazardous materials. You will lead the global hazardous materials department and be responsible for all hazardous materials-related operations worldwide. Additionally, you will serve as the Global Hazardous Materials Safety Advisor for sea, road, rail, and inland waterway transport, ensuring the safety and well-being of our seafarers, assets, and the environment at all times.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a department of dedicated, international hazardous materials professionals, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration.
- Manage and drive Hapag-Lloyd's hazardous materials capabilities and reputation across the organization, as well as develop hazardous materials guidelines based on established industry-leading standards.
- Collaborate and resolve conflicts with global partner lines and cooperate with global authorities, competent authorities, and laboratories in a trustful relationship, resolving high-level concerns related to hazardous materials issues.
- Maintain a high level of hazardous materials ownership and expertise within the Hapag-Lloyd Sales & Customer Service organization, as well as towards customers through global F2F hazardous materials roadshows and dedicated training.
- Strengthen and accelerate the validation of hazardous materials in our Knowledge Centre (KC) in Gdansk (Poland), including monitoring the process performance and facilitating the steering of the KC for the future.
- Frequent review of the global hazardous materials organization and continuous striving for efficiency improvements without compromising safety, as well as setting and developing operational targets and KPIs to be presented in regular C-level meetings.
- Willingsness to actively participate in, potentially lead, and steer international working groups under the umbrella of the WSC or IVODGA.
- Ensure that all seafarers have the legally required hazardous materials training for ship handling in accordance with the IMDG Code / 49 CFR.
Your Profile
We are looking for a highly experienced professional with a proven track record in a similar role, covering international shipping operations with excellent knowledge of hazardous materials. You should have:
Extensive experience in leadership of large international teams, including team management, motivation, and talent development.Experience and effective participation in international working groups preferred.Strong ability to work under high pressure and with high personal responsibility for Hapag-Lloyd seafarers and assets at any time.Ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders and interact in a matrix organization up to C-level.Experience in driving negotiations and delivering results, as well as the ability to make balanced decisions and present detailed issues clearly to both the team and stakeholders.High Project Management knowledge coupled with very strong communication skills.Strong analytical and organizational qualities.Capability to fluently speak, read, and write in English - any other additional languages are a plus.Willingsness to travel frequently.We Offer
