Project Overview:
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are increasingly affecting the Baltic Sea and adjacent estuaries. The significant fish mortality observed in the Oder estuary highlights the urgent need to address the threats posed by HABs to ecosystem services, biodiversity, and public health. This research position focuses on assessing the tolerance levels of fish to toxic algae, specifically Prymnesium parvum, aiming to enhance risk assessments and develop early warning systems.
Research Focus:
The role involves conducting ecotoxicological experiments with fish, including behavioral assessments and metabolic performance measurements to identify toxicity thresholds of algae. Experiments will be performed under controlled conditions simulating environmental stressors such as heat waves and hypoxia. The position is part of the HABBAL research consortium, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and will involve collaboration with experts in molecular ecotoxicology, genetics, biochemistry, and socioeconomics.
Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will possess a relevant university degree and a doctoral degree in aquatic ecology, ecophysiology, or ecotoxicology. Candidates should demonstrate a strong motivation to work with live fish, design and execute complex experiments, and publish findings in reputable scientific journals. Experience in fish care, aquaculture technology, biostatistics, and programming (R, Python) is essential, along with the ability to collaborate in an international team. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required, and a class B driving license is advantageous.
