Our mission is to make product knowledge engaging, user-friendly, and feature-rich. By developing a comprehensive understanding of product knowledge, we aim to accurately interpret customer intentions, whether they are related to shopping or product offerings from sellers.
As an Ontologist, you will collaborate with a global team of knowledge specialists to design world-class, intuitive taxonomy and ontology models that enhance product discoverability across Amazon's web and mobile platforms.
Your role will involve working closely with business stakeholders, data science experts, and engineering teams to deliver knowledge-driven solutions that improve product visibility for customers.
In this position, you will have a direct influence on customer experiences and contribute significantly to the foundational product knowledge of the company.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop logical, semantically rich, and scalable data models for Amazon's extensive product catalog.
- Ensure that our ontologies cover comprehensive sub-domains suitable for machine ingestion and inference.
- Conduct research on global product understanding to create scalable data models that address customer challenges and improve product discoverability.
- Utilize Generative Artificial Intelligence (generative AI) models to create new schemas.
- Enhance existing data retrieval methods by leveraging our vast product catalog and query languages.
- Analyze website metrics and product discovery behaviors to make informed decisions for optimizing our global knowledge graph data models.
- Contribute to the development of innovative tool features and processes for the Ontology team.
- Promote alignment with ontology modeling and technology best practices within our organization and across Amazon.
- Coordinate cross-functional projects involving a diverse range of technical and non-technical teams.

Basic Qualifications:
- Degree in Library Science, Information Systems, Linguistics, or equivalent professional experience.
- 3+ years of relevant experience in ontology and/or taxonomy roles.
- Proven expertise in data retrieval and research methodologies.
- Ability to comprehend complex processes and communicate them clearly.
- Strong communication skills to convey knowledge-based requirements to engineering and retail teams.
- Familiarity with Semantic Web technologies (RDF/s, OWL), query languages (SPARQL), and validation/reasoning standards (SHACL, SPIN).
- Experience with open-source and commercial ontology engineering tools (e.g., Protege, TopQuadrant products, PoolParty).
- Detail-oriented problem-solving skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage ambiguity.
- Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication abilities.
- Proficient in English.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Library Science, Information Systems, Linguistics, or related fields.
- Experience in building ontologies within the e-commerce and semantic search domains.
- Familiarity with schema-level constructs (e.g., higher-order classes, punning, property inheritance).
- Proficiency in SQL and SPARQL.
- Understanding of the software engineering lifecycle.
- Knowledge of ontology manipulation programming libraries.
- Exposure to data science and/or machine learning, including graph embeddings.
