The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam is seeking a dedicated research scientist to explore the geomorphological changes and erosion patterns of the Comoros archipelago. This role aims to evaluate theories concerning the timeline of volcanic activity and the geodynamic history of the region, whether it is influenced by a hotspot or a tectonic plate boundary. The postdoctoral researcher will investigate how volcanic surface aging impacts the shape of drainage systems and river networks.

The successful candidate will employ quantitative geomorphological techniques, including topographic analysis and landscape evolution modeling, to establish the volcanic chronology. Additionally, high-resolution satellite radar (SAR) data will be utilized to enhance the research outcomes. Another significant aspect of this project may involve assessing lahar hazards and the repercussions of seismic events on landslide occurrences.

The primary supervisor for this position will be Dr. Loraine Gourbet from the Earth Surface Process Modelling section, with collaboration from Prof. Thomas Walter and Prof. Nicolas Villeneuve.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth investigations into the geomorphology and landscape evolution of the Comoros archipelago.
  • Quantify erosion rates across the islands based on paleosurface reconstructions.
  • Develop a relative timeline for the formation of the islands and their volcanic structures.
  • Acquire and analyze satellite data, focusing on the active Karthala volcano.
  • Publish findings in reputable international journals and present research at global conferences.
  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals for external funding opportunities.
  • Engage in collaborative efforts with team members and associated sections at the Helmholtz Centre.

Your Qualifications:

  • PhD in Earth Sciences (to be completed by the contract start date).
  • Demonstrated interest in volcanic geomorphology.
  • Proficiency in a programming language, preferably Matlab or Python.
  • Experience in numerical modeling of landscape evolution is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with remote sensing data analysis (satellite SAR, Lidar, or drones) is desirable.
  • Proven track record of publications (articles under review will be considered).
  • Documented ability to work in international teams and excellent communication skills.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
