Postdoctoral Researcher Aerosol Effects on Atmospheric Dynamics

Heidelberg University is a leading institution in the field of environmental physics, and we are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team. The successful candidate will work on a project focused on the effects of aerosols on atmospheric dynamics, with a specific emphasis on the development of new datasets for representing aerosol effects in climate predictions and CMIP7 simulations.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Co-create a new anthropogenic aerosol dataset for CMIP7, coordinate project contribution, and report results to other EXPECT partners
  • Perform and analyze experiments with ICON, Germany's next CMIP model, and the scientific analysis of big data sets from model experiments and observations
  • Be responsible for the quality control of results, the publication of scientific findings, and the presentation of results at international scientific conferences
  • Active help in the supervision of bachelor and master projects and participation in our specific teaching program is welcome
Your Profile:
  • Hold a PhD degree in physics, climate sciences, meteorology, computer sciences, or a closely related field, preferably obtained within the last three years, and have experience in the research fields atmospheric dynamics, climate change, climate modelling, and/or aerosols and their physical effects
  • Have experience in programming and big data analysis (python, shell scripts, FORTRAN, and/or comparable), ideally with knowledge on how to handle complex programs and data streams as needed for performing experiments with climate models on high-performance computers (ICON or similar)
  • Be interested in applying methods for automated detection, which can involve machine learning
  • Have a visible track record in your research areas and have achieved excellent results in education and training
  • Be enthusiastic, enjoy working in a team, and want to further develop your own skills for your future career
  • Have very good oral and written English skills (German is not mandatory) and the willingness for inter-/national travel
  • May have some experience in acquiring funding
  • Enjoy inspiring younger students for scientific work
