About the Position
This position plays a crucial role in supporting the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences (FMDHS) by overseeing laboratory and office environments, particularly within the Heidelberg Precinct. The incumbent is tasked with ensuring the secure and efficient functioning of research and educational activities through adherence to laboratory standards, implementation of OHS policies, and acquisition of necessary licenses and permits, all while navigating a multifaceted organizational framework.Your key responsibilities will encompass:
- Providing pertinent technical, compliance, and safety guidance to all laboratory personnel.
- Formulating local protocols, conducting risk assessments, developing standard operating procedures, and maintaining the currency of existing documentation.
- Establishing robust relationships with facility users, operational teams, and stakeholders, collaborating to execute compliance strategies and initiatives.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will exhibit exceptional interpersonal and organizational capabilities, with a proven ability to manage and collaborate effectively within a scientific or medical laboratory context. A comprehensive understanding of OHS legislation and laboratory regulations is essential, along with the aptitude to devise practical solutions to intricate challenges. Furthermore, the candidate should demonstrate high proficiency in computer skills and adaptability to new technologies.
Additional qualifications include:
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant field, such as science or Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S).
- Capacity to operate both independently and as a collaborative team member.
- Extensive experience in a scientific or medical laboratory setting, including personnel coordination in a matrix environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of OGTR regulatory standards and proven experience in a PC2 containment facility.

The MDHS OH&S and Laboratory Management team collaborates with all Faculty members to enhance process improvement and risk management, ensuring the well-being of staff and the regulatory integrity of the University. With numerous organizational units, including off-campus and hospital-embedded sites, Laboratory Managers support OHS management by implementing safe work practices, providing training, and conducting regular hazard inspections to maintain a safe working environment.
