The Product Knowledge Ontology Team is dedicated to creating a standardized, semantically rich, and universally applicable framework of product knowledge that enhances customer shopping experiences, seller listings, and internal product data enrichment.

As an Ontologist, you will collaborate with a global team of knowledge builders to produce world-class, intuitive, and comprehensive taxonomy and ontology models that optimize product discovery across Amazon's web and mobile platforms.

Your role involves working closely with business partners, data science, and engineering teams to deliver knowledge-driven solutions that enhance product discoverability for customers.

This position allows you to have a direct impact on the customer experience and the foundational product knowledge of the company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design logical, semantically rich, and scalable data models for Amazon's extensive product catalog.
  • Ensure our ontologies cover comprehensive sub-domains that are suitable for machine ingestion and inference.
  • Conduct research on global understanding of Amazon products to create scalable data models that address customer challenges and improve product discoverability.
  • Develop new schemas utilizing Generative Artificial Intelligence (generative AI) models.
  • Enhance existing data retrieval methods by leveraging our vast product catalog and query languages.
  • Analyze website metrics and product discovery behaviors to make informed decisions on optimizing our knowledge graph data models globally.
  • Contribute to the development of new features and processes for the Ontology team.
  • Promote alignment with ontology modeling and technology best practices within our organization and across Amazon.
  • Coordinate cross-functional projects involving a diverse range of technical and non-technical teams.

Basic Qualifications

  • Degree in Library Science, Information Systems, Linguistics, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in ontology and/or taxonomy roles.
  • Proven skills in data retrieval and research techniques.
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex processes and communicate them in straightforward language.
  • Capacity to articulate knowledge-based requirements and needs to engineering and retail teams.
  • Familiarity with Semantic Web technologies (RDF/s, OWL), query languages (SPARQL), and validation/reasoning standards (SHACL, SPIN).
  • Knowledge of open-source and commercial ontology engineering tools (e.g., Protege, TopQuadrant products, PoolParty).
  • Detail-oriented problem-solving skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage ambiguity.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient English language skills.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library Science, Information Systems, Linguistics, or other relevant fields.
  • Experience in building ontologies within the e-commerce and semantic search domains.
  • Familiarity with schema-level constructs (e.g., higher-order classes, punning, property inheritance).
  • Proficiency in SQL and SPARQL.
  • Understanding of the software engineering life cycle.
  • Familiarity with ontology manipulation programming libraries.
  • Exposure to data science and/or machine learning, including graph embeddings.
