Process Optimization Engineer
Overview
An effective process optimization engineer will leverage their expertise in operational enhancement to quantitatively evaluate existing production and business system performance, implementing changes aimed at minimizing expenses and maximizing capacity. This position requires exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities, along with a comprehensive understanding of manufacturing processes. Process optimization engineers will not only implement changes but also prioritize initiatives based on potential impact. They will collaborate independently across various departments, including production, design, quality assurance, finance, supply chain, demand forecasting, production scheduling, and multiple engineering teams to enhance factory operations and reduce costs. A successful team member in this role will balance immediate tactical improvements with long-term enhancements to business processes and systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, quantify, analyze, and implement enhancements to production processes to improve safety and ergonomics, quality (first pass yield), availability (uptime), performance (cycle time variability), capital utilization, and demand fulfillment.
- Assess and document value-adding (VA), non-value-adding (NVA), and necessary non-value-adding (NVABN) time requirements for both manual and automated processes using standardized templates, software, and methodologies.
- Establish required operational (RTO) headcount budgets and on-roll targets by production area.
- Develop line balancing strategies for production management; ensure acknowledgment from process engineering that critical quality and sequence dependencies are maintained.
- Create and implement tools to evaluate efficiency and identify cost-saving opportunities across the organization.
- Define and oversee operational metrics for current and future production systems.
- Calculate, propose, and execute new methodologies and processes for existing production systems.
- Educate and engage cross-functional teams on the significance of continuous improvement.
- Manage and communicate improvement opportunities and implementation strategies to all relevant levels and functions within the organization.
- Assist in economic feasibility assessments and make-or-buy decisions through analysis and collaboration with various departments.
- Support ergonomic feasibility assessments by evaluating current conditions and proposing and implementing innovative solutions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering Management (Master's degree preferred) with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
- Exceptional critical thinking and communication skills, demonstrating a high level of emotional intelligence, autonomy, and servant leadership.
- Natural ability to quickly grasp new processes and systems, with a keen attention to detail.
- Experience in industrial cost control, reporting, and analysis within high-volume manufacturing settings.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office applications (primarily Excel and Visio).
- Leadership or management experience and/or comprehensive project management experience.
- Familiarity with industry-standard problem-solving methodologies (A3, ATS, UPS), preventive and autonomous maintenance concepts, time/motion study analysis (MTN, MODAPTS, MOST), continuous improvement techniques (Six Sigma, lean manufacturing), and change management.
- Experience with applied mathematics and operations research (linear and non-linear programming, stochastic simulation methods).
- Proficiency in any or all of the following: simulation modeling software (FlexSim, AnyLogic), data visualization tools (Tableau), design software (SolidWorks, CATIA), programming languages (SQL, Python, MATLAB, VBA).
