We are currently seeking an Intern in Software Engineering for Space Systems (f/m/x) for our institute focused on Software Technology in Braunschweig, specifically in the area of Distributed Spacecraft Software Architectures.
Your Responsibilities:The DLR is advancing the Scalable On-board Computing for Space Avionics (ScOSA), a hybrid distributed computing framework designed to deliver high-performance on-board processing while ensuring superior reliability compared to conventional on-board computing methods. A crucial next step involves managing autonomous distributed space system architectures, including distributed spacecraft, fractionated satellites, and satellite constellations. The design of adaptive management algorithms is essential for enabling inter-satellite collaboration and opportunistic resource reutilization, while also ensuring mechanisms for autonomous spacecraft operations. Additionally, these algorithms must consider limitations of distributed spacecraft, such as network disruptions, restricted network capacity, and network reconfiguration due to node failures or reintegration. Consequently, the objective of this thesis work is to investigate distributed spacecraft flight software architectures, such as the Local-Global policy, utilizing network simulation tools (e.g., Mininet) to assess their performance across various system topologies and their relevance to the evolution of the ScOSA architecture.
The thesis work encompasses the following tasks:
- Conduct a comprehensive review of the current state of software architectures for distributed space systems.
- Assess the appropriateness of selected software architectures for diverse distributed space system topologies.
- Implement or modify the chosen software architecture within the ScOSA middleware.
- Establish metrics and evaluate the performance of the selected distributed spacecraft software architecture under varying system topologies and network configurations.
- Master's student in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline.
- Genuine interest in distributed systems, autonomous systems, or computer networks.
- Proficiency in GNU/Linux, C++, and Python.
- Experience with computer networks and autonomous systems is advantageous.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English (supervision will be conducted in English).
