Join Our Team
The Legal department at DeepL is in search of a skilled and motivated professional to establish and lead our Compliance function. In this position, you will utilize your expertise to design and execute essential compliance processes and procedures, with a strong focus on ethical standards. Initially, you will function as an individual contributor, spearheading the development of our compliance program. As the department expands, you will be expected to recruit, build, and manage a high-performing compliance team to ensure DeepL's compliance with regulatory requirements and industry-specific ethical standards.
Your Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain a robust compliance program, including relevant policies and procedures that reflect high ethical standards.
- Foster a culture of integrity and ethics by integrating these values into all programs and processes.
- Monitor and interpret regulatory changes, ensuring company policies are aligned with applicable laws and regulations.
- Conduct regular risk assessments and devise mitigation strategies.
- Create and deliver compliance training programs for employees.
- Collaborate with various business units (Engineering, Product, DevOps, Finance, People & Culture, etc.) to facilitate the implementation of compliance practices and controls within the organization.
- Prepare and present compliance reports to senior management.
- Continuously evaluate company risks, perform risk assessments, and implement risk treatment strategies.

Qualities We Seek
- A successful candidate should possess at least 8+ years of experience in Legal, Ethics, or Compliance.
- Experience in developing and implementing a comprehensive compliance program from the ground up, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements and ethical practices.
- Proven people management skills, as the role involves building the compliance team.
- Demonstrated commitment to ethical standards and integrity, with the ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
- A strong understanding of legal requirements and best practices in fraud detection, sanctions screening, and anti-money laundering.
- Experience in a publicly listed company, particularly in the US, is a significant advantage.
- Familiarity with software business processes (development, product, marketing, etc.) is a plus.
- Professional certifications (e.g., CCEP) are highly desirable.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proven capacity to operate in ambiguous environments and navigate from current challenges to proposed solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, as we operate in an English-speaking environment.
