Regional Environmental Operations Leader, EU Sustainability Management

Overview
The Environmental Assurance and Protection division is in search of a Regional Environmental Operations Leader (REOL) who will spearhead and enhance environmental operational standards across our facilities in Germany, Austria, Poland, Czechia, and Slovakia. This position will also offer technical guidance for our current operations and future growth within the region.
This role is pivotal in ensuring that strategic and operational plans are effectively implemented by providing technical assistance for ongoing operations and prospective expansions across various sites within the designated region.
The REOL will report to the Business Environmental Leader for Middle Europe through the EU Environmental Assurance and Protection division.
Additionally, the REOL will collaborate with the operations leadership teams to implement company environmental protocols and guarantee adherence to all relevant national, state/provincial, regional, and local regulations. By utilizing risk assessments and compliance reviews, this individual will champion site-specific continuous improvement initiatives aimed at minimizing environmental impacts and disseminating best practices. This role may require up to 50% travel to various locations across the specified countries.
About the Team
The Environmental Assurance and Protection division safeguards Amazon's operations and addresses our customers' needs by proactively reducing environmental regulatory risks and conserving the environment.
- Oversee and implement multi-site responsibilities to adhere to air quality, stormwater management, waste disposal, wastewater treatment, and other environmental regulations and permits. This includes necessary national, state/provincial, and local reporting.
- Establish and nurture relationships with business partners to bolster their success in environmental compliance, performance, and sustainability efforts.
- Engage in the development, introduction, control, enhancement, and application of environmental management systems, procedures, processes, and products.
- Evaluate and analyze site performance against established environmental policy requirements. For any deficiencies, devise a corrective action plan for the site to address and rectify all identified issues.
- Facilitate interactions with regulatory authorities and assist in the execution of any notification, permission, and approval processes in accordance with environmental legislation (water/wastewater, pollution control, waste management).
- Contribute to the annual data collection and reporting (both internal and external) as well as controls (measurements, reviews) on environmentally significant matters.
- Manage environmental risk programs and/or projects, where the risk is defined, but the business challenge and solution may not be clearly outlined.
- Serve as the environmental subject matter expert for your area; stay informed on relevant industry trends (e.g., evolving regulations, innovations in risk mitigation, testing methodologies), knowing how to apply them across teams, and when not to.
- Drive outcomes based on goals and regulations, informing and assisting in establishing mechanisms where applicable to maintain risk within acceptable levels.
- Oversee overall timelines for your environmental risk mitigation projects, address challenges, and keep the scope of work manageable.
A Day in the Life
Each day will present unique challenges. You will visit our Middle Europe locations, engage with local teams, and ensure that the sites and the organization as a whole are equipped to achieve effective environmental compliance. You may collaborate with our Legal Team to engage with regulators or assist sites in delivering environmental training. Flexibility is crucial in this role, as priorities will shift frequently, and as a team, we must be prepared to adapt accordingly.
- Bachelor's degree in civil, chemical, or environmental engineering or a related field.
- Experience serving as an environmental technical resource, program specialist, or program manager.
- Proficient in English, both written and verbal, with the ability to interface comfortably with site and regional leaders.
- In-depth knowledge of EU, national, and regional environmental regulations.
- Experience engaging with regulatory agencies in permit applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in warehouse operations and logistics is advantageous.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly in using pivot tables and developing charts and graphics.
- Detail-oriented and technically inclined to collaborate closely with engineering teams to comprehend operational processes for environmental risk assessment.
- Experience managing change in multi-site environments and the ability to influence peers and superiors.
