Key Responsibilities

  • Assist and advise Principal Investigators (PIs) in the preparation of DNA and libraries for various sequencing techniques, including metabarcoding, e-DNA, RAD sequencing, and other advanced genomic applications.
  • Devise methods for effective DNA extraction and quantification from challenging marine sources, such as meiofauna, macrobenthos, zooplankton, and deep-sea organisms.
  • Support PIs in the bioinformatics analysis of Illumina sequencing outputs, preparing findings for scientific reports and publications.
  • Oversee the organization, operation, maintenance, and enhancement of the NextGen Laboratory facilities.
  • Coordinate and document sample preparation and sequencing processes for both internal and external collaborators.
  • Manage communications with academic research groups, service providers, and database administrators.
  • Participate in and organize field sampling campaigns for NextGen projects, ensuring proper sampling design and equipment management.
  • Contribute to the research initiatives at Senckenberg, particularly in areas related to biodiversity loss in the Anthropocene.
  • Engage in administrative roles that support research activities, including participation in committees and outreach programs.
  • Demonstrate willingness to participate in marine expeditions.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a scientific discipline, preferably with a focus on marine molecular methods.
  • Certification in Illumina training and hands-on experience with NextGen sequencing platforms.
  • Proficiency in library preparation techniques and quantification methods.
  • Strong background in laboratory management and infrastructure enhancement.
  • Experience in demultiplexing and statistical analysis of sequencing libraries.
  • Programming skills for NextGen analysis using languages such as R, BASH, or Python.
  • Ability to write bioinformatics scripts for parallel processing on UNIX/Linux systems.
  • Experience managing sequencing projects in collaboration with external partners.
  • Solid understanding of DNA and NextGen sequencing technologies.
  • Experience in marine research expeditions and knowledge of sampling methodologies.
  • Excellent communication skills and a strong service orientation.
